Over the years, with the rise in human activities since the pre-industrial age and the depletion of the ozone layer which are results from these activities; significant long-term changes have become evident in the average weather patterns which have come to define Earth’s local, regional and global climates. These changes are quite noticeable as evidences of the term climate change and the effect of this change cannot be over emphasized as they continue to pose grave threats to humanity and the serenity of the environment at large.

Human activities undeniably have been the leading causes of climate change as estimated by records from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The records show that the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, have had an increase in industrial activities, like the burning of more and more fossil fuels.

Changing of vast areas of land from forests to farmland and lots more have been estimated to have increased Earth’s global average temperature with key indicators.

Yes, such as global land and ocean temperature. Increase, rising sea levels, ice loss at Earth’s poles, frequency and severity changes in extreme weather such as hurricanes, heatwave, wildfires, droughts, floods and precipitation etc.

Another factor that contributes to climate change, is the natural cause. The natural causes such as the sun’s intensity, volcanic eruptions, and changes in naturally occurring greenhouse gas concentrations. And to mention but a few, have played and still play minor characters in influencing the rapid warming seen in recent decades. Though NASA scientists have said the influence is too small unlike the human activities.

Climate change is increasingly becoming a serious challenge to the world, and like other countries, Nigeria is no exception.

The socio-economic development of Nigeria is threatened as it faces changes in the physical and ecological environment. Changes in laws, seasons as various manifestations of these impacts are evident in Nigeria. Which includes an increase in drought, scarcity of food instigated somewhat by irregularities in rainfall and over flooding. EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND NIGERIA’S NDC.

According to the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the mean annual variability and trend of rainfall over Nigeria in the last six decades depicts several inter-annual fluctuations. That has been responsible for dry and wet years or extreme climate events such as droughts and floods in many parts of the country.

NiMet has also predicted that as a result of these climatic conditions, incidences of malaria, meningitis and other diseases will be higher in areas with hotter temperatures and with humidity above 60 percent.

It’s on this note that the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) has been provided with solutions in this essay to help combat and adapt to climate change in Nigeria.

First is the need to mainstream climate change into national, regional and state development plans. Adaption of policies that will be needed to be an integral part of government initiatives. Raising awareness on issues of climate change which the people are presently ignorant of and the dangers in burning of fossil fuel and deforestation to humanity at large.

Additionally, University lecturers should be financially motivated to carry out research in various fields of knowledge related to climate change, so that innovative research can contribute to practical solutions.

Hence, like Franco Hollande once said, “We have a single mission: to protect and hand on the planet to the next generation”. It is not but the sole duty of NDC to combat this impending doom awaiting Nigeria in the form of climate change; but the collective duty of everybody in ensuring that the right thing is done, for our sake and for the sake of the generations yet unborn.
